Macondo is the fictionalized town in García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude. It was inspired by William Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County, but most of the concepts from the novel come from the town in northern Colombia that García Márquez grew up in while he was raised by his grandparents. That town is called Aracataco, and it resides in the district of Magdalena. The name of Macondo comes from the word in the Bantu language which means "banana" and was also the name of a banana plantation near Aracataca. In June of 2006, the people of Aracataca attempted to pass a referendm to change the name of the town to Aracataca Macondo in honor of García Márquez's novel, and although there were more votes for than against it, the referndum failed to pass due to lack of voters. |
